At the store
Compare the coverage printed on the product with the number you used in the calculator. If the label says a box covers 20 square feet and you estimated with 23.5, redo the box count on the spot.
For anything color-matched or made in batches, such as paint, tile, flooring, and shingles, buy the full amount in one purchase and check that lot numbers match.
Before you pay
A quick check at the register protects the budget.
- Ask about the return window and whether opened or tinted products can be returned.
- Keep the receipt with the leftover material.
- Decide what to keep for repairs: a sealed box of flooring, a few tiles, or a labeled quart of paint.
