How Many Flooring Boxes Should You Buy?

Flooring is sold by the box, so the final answer is not square footage alone. Waste, cuts, and spare boards matter.

Measure each room separately, add the square footage, then apply waste. Ten percent is common for simple straight plank layouts.

Use a higher waste percentage for diagonal layouts, closets, odd corners, stair noses, and rooms with many doorway transitions.

Keep one unopened box or a few clean leftover boards when possible. Matching the same product later can be hard if the color lot changes or the product is discontinued.
