How Many Boxes of Flooring Do I Need?
Measure the room in square feet, add 10 percent for waste, divide by the square feet printed on the box, and round up. A 12 x 15 foot room is 180 square feet, 198 with waste, which is 9 boxes at 23.5 square feet per box.

Multiply length by width for each rectangular space and add them together. Closets, hallways, and alcoves count. For an L-shaped room, split it into two rectangles.
Do not subtract small fixed objects such as a floor vent or a narrow column. Subtract only large areas that will not get flooring, such as a kitchen island that stays in place.
Add waste for your layout
Every row ends with a cut, and some boards arrive damaged or get miscut. The layout pattern decides how much of each cut can be reused.

Convert square feet to boxes
Find the coverage on the carton. It is usually listed as square feet per box and varies a lot between products. Divide your adjusted area by that number and round up to a whole box.
For the 180 square foot room: 180 x 1.10 = 198 square feet. At 23.5 square feet per box, 198 / 23.5 = 8.4, so you buy 9 boxes, which is 211.5 square feet of flooring.
Why rounding up is not wasteful
Running out with a few boards to go is the expensive outcome. A box bought later can come from a different production lot with a slight shade or locking-profile difference. Buy the full amount at once, check that lot numbers match, and keep leftover boards flat and dry for repairs.
