Roof Shingle Bundles and Squares

Roofing math uses squares and bundles, but roof safety, pitch, waste, and flashing details make this a rough planning tool only.

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof area. Many asphalt shingles use three bundles per square, but the product label is the final source.

Pitch, valleys, dormers, hips, ridges, and cut waste can change the estimate. Complex roofs often need more waste than a simple rectangle.

Do not climb a roof just to measure for an online calculator. Use this estimate to understand quotes and ask better questions.
