Shingle Bundles per Square by Brand: GAF, Owens Corning, IKO

Most architectural shingles from GAF, Owens Corning, and IKO are packed 3 bundles to the square, but not all of them. Owens Corning Duration Premium takes 4 bundles per square, and Owens Corning lists coverage per square as 98.4 square feet rather than a full 100, which adds a bundle or two on a typical roof.

What this changes on a real roof

Take 3,000 square feet of roof. At a full 100 square feet per square and 3 bundles, that is 30 squares and 90 bundles before waste.

With Owens Corning Duration, each square of shingles covers 98.4 square feet, so the same roof is 3,000 / 98.4 = 30.5 squares, or 92 bundles. With Duration Premium at 4 bundles per square it is 30.5 x 4 = 122 bundles. Add your waste allowance on top of either number.

GAF also lists nails per square: 256 for Timberline HDZ and 316 for Royal Sovereign at four nails per shingle. High-wind installs that call for six nails need more.

Check the wrapper before you order

IKO notes that not every brand packs three bundles to a square and that some brands need a little more than three bundles to cover one. The bundle wrapper states the coverage, and it is the number to trust for your exact product and color.

Starter strips and hip and ridge caps are separate products sold by linear feet, not squares.
Your roofer's quote should state squares, bundles, and the waste allowance. Compare those numbers across quotes.
