How Much Drywall, Mud, Tape, and Screws Do I Need?
Divide the total wall and ceiling area by 32 for 4x8 sheets and add 10 percent. For every 1,000 square feet of drywall, plan on about 32 sheets, roughly 9 to 10 gallons of ready-mixed joint compound, 350 to 400 feet of tape, and about 1,000 to 1,200 screws.

Wall area is the room perimeter times the wall height. Add the ceiling if you are covering it, subtract large openings, and add 10 percent for cuts. Then divide by the sheet size.

Finishing supplies per 1,000 square feet
Finishing materials scale with area. These are rule-of-thumb quantities for a standard taped and finished job. Beginners and smoother finish levels use more compound.

A worked example
A 12 x 12 foot room with 8 foot walls has 384 square feet of wall and 144 square feet of ceiling. Subtract 50 square feet of doors and windows for 478 square feet, then add 10 percent to get about 526 square feet.
That is 17 sheets of 4x8 drywall. For finishing, half of the per-1,000 quantities is a fair start: one 4.5 gallon bucket of compound plus a little extra, one 250 foot roll of tape, and about 600 screws.
Safety before demolition
Sanding joint compound creates fine dust, so wear a respirator and seal off the room. In homes built before 1978, old paint may contain lead, and some older wall textures and joint compounds contained asbestos. Have suspect materials tested before sanding or tearing them out.
