When bags make sense and when bulk wins
Compare the price of 13.5 bags against the delivered price of a yard. Bulk material is often much cheaper per cubic foot, but the delivery fee is fixed, so small orders lose the advantage.
- Choose bags for less than about one cubic yard, tight access, or work spread over several weekends.
- Choose bulk for one yard or more when a truck can dump close to the beds.
- Bags are clean to store and easy to return unopened. A bulk pile needs a tarp and a wheelbarrow.
- With a pickup, many yards will load a single cubic yard of mulch directly and skip the delivery fee.
Avoid over-ordering
If you are topping up an existing bed, measure the depth that is already there and order only the difference. Two to three inches total is enough to hold moisture and block weeds. Piling mulch deeper, or against trunks and stems, can hold too much moisture against the plant.
